Windows 2000 Compatibility

Microsoft Windows 2000
There's a few things you need to know when installing NotePad+ on a Windows 2000 system. Windows 2000 by default protects it's system files. This is quite an improvement, but it can be a pain when you actually have a reason to replace a system file, like notepad. Follow these instructions to install NotePad+ on Windows 2000:

In Explorer, go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View and uncheck 'Do not show hidden files and folders' and 'Hide Protected Operating System Files'.

Remove the Windows 2000 installation cdrom if it's in the cdrom drive.

Now, (after copying the original notepad.exe as mentioned in the readme, if you wish) overwrite notepad.exe with the new notepad.exe in the following folders (standard naming conventions, your folders may be called a little differently):

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32
C:\WINNT

The last one is important to keep NotePad+ from being overwritten with the original by Windows 2000 (it keeps copies of it's system files in this folder). But it may not exist on your system, in which case you omit the action on this directory.

If you installed Windows 2000 from harddisk and still have the installation directory available, you also need to replace a file called NOTEPAD.EX_ in that directory with the new notepad.exe. Such an installation directory on your harddisk is usually called:

C:\I386

After checking 'Do not show hidden files and folders' and 'Hide Protected Operating System Files' again and associating file types in NotePad+ from Options -> Preferences -> Associations (like mentioned in the readme) you're ready to go!
